What SliceWP gets right — and what it leaves on the table

SliceWP is genuinely good at what it does. The free core is more capable than most "free" plugins in the WordPress affiliate category, the admin UI is one of the cleanest in the space, and the team ships steadily. If you're shopping for a SliceWP alternative because you want a "better SliceWP" you'll be disappointed — Asteris is a different shape of product, with a much bigger feature surface. The stores moving across to us are the ones who hit a feature wall SliceWP doesn't intend to close.

The MLM wall

Two-tier referrals (where affiliates earn a small commission on sub-affiliates they recruit) isn't on the SliceWP roadmap that we can find. The cart wall

SliceWP is WooCommerce-only. If you ever want to run an affiliate program on Easy Digital Downloads or Surecart in addition to (or instead of) WC, SliceWP can't track those carts. Asteris ships EDD and Surecart adapters in core. All cart integrations →

The payout wall

SliceWP supports manual payouts (mark as paid, send the money yourself). Asteris ships Stripe Connect Express direct payouts at 0.25%, PayPal Payouts API at 2% with batch scheduling, and bank-CSV export in AU + US formats. If you're running more than ~30 affiliates, the manual-payout overhead becomes painful fast.

Migrating from SliceWP to Asteris

SliceWP exports affiliates and referrals via the standard WP admin export. Our SliceWP migration guide covers the WP-CLI command that reads that export and recreates affiliates with their balances, referrals with their attribution, and historical visits where SliceWP recorded them. The legacy referral parameter ?affwp=... (or SliceWP's equivalent) keeps working via a compatibility redirect, so existing affiliate links in the wild don't break.

The free-tier comparison most stores skip

SliceWP and Asteris both ship a free tier — that's worth flagging because most paid affiliate plugins don't. The free tiers solve different problems, though, and the right zero-cost answer depends on which constraints bite first.

SliceWP's free core has no hard cap on affiliate count. It supports WooCommerce, has the core admin UI, and is genuinely usable for a small program. The constraint kicks in at the feature ceiling — no MLM, limited reporting, manual payouts only, no AI swipe, no fraud detection layer beyond basic IP throttling. You hit the wall when you want a Pro feature, not when you hit a count threshold.

Asteris Free hits the opposite constraint pattern: feature set is identical to paid except for four gated Pro features (MLM, AI swipe-copy, cloud-assist fraud, Stripe Connect direct payouts), but there's a hard cap at 25 active affiliates. You hit the wall when you outgrow the cap, regardless of which features you've enabled. Most stores hit the count cap before they need a Pro feature — and at that point, $149/yr Starter unlocks unlimited affiliates plus all four Pro features at once.

The practical implication: if you expect to stay under 25 affiliates indefinitely, SliceWP free might serve longer because it doesn't cap count. If you're a growing program planning to hit 50+ affiliates within a year, Asteris Free + planned upgrade to Starter is the cheaper total path because you skip the SliceWP Pro middle step. When SliceWP is still the right answer

If you're running a tiny single-tier program (under 20 affiliates), only on WooCommerce, and never plan to add MLM or non-WC carts, SliceWP's free core is genuinely a good answer and you don't need to pay anyone. We'll also say what we said for AffiliateWP: if you're invested in SliceWP and happy with it, stay. The migration cost isn't immediate value — the value resets the moment you need a feature Asteris ships and SliceWP doesn't.
